• Manu Bhaker became the first Indian woman shooter to claim an Olympic medal by finishing third in the 10m air pistol event on July 28.
• The 22-year-old Bhaker, who hails from Jhajjar in Haryana, scored 221.7 to finish third in the eight-woman final.
• The achievement opened the country’s account in the ongoing Paris Games and ended a 12-year wait for its shooters.
• Oh Ye Jin of South Korea clinched the gold medal with the new Olympic record of 243.2. South Korea’s Kim Yeji claimed the silver with a total of 241.3.
• Bhaker was part of the Tokyo Olympics and had gone home in tears after drawing a blank. Bhaker was well on course to qualify for the final but a pistol malfunction stole her six precious minutes and she fell just two points short of making the final.
• India won shooting medals at three consecutive Olympics from Athens 2004 to London 2012 but drew blank at the next two editions.
• Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore won India’s first Olympic medal in shooting with a silver at Athens 2004 in the men’s double trap.
• Abhinav Bindra won India’s only gold medal in shooting in the men’s 10m air rifle at Beijing 2008.
• The last time India won shooting medals at the Olympics was in 2012 London Olympics where rapid-fire pistol shooter Vijay Kumar and 10m air rifle marksman Gagan Narang clinched silver and bronze respectively.
