President confers National Awards to 47 teachers

President Ram Nath Kovind conferred National Awards to 47 teachers on Teachers’ Day.

National Awards to Teachers

The awards are given on Teachers’ Day to celebrate the unique contribution of some of the finest teachers in the country and to honour those who, through their commitment, have not only improved the quality of school education but also enriched the lives of their students.

Instituted in 1958, the awards are given away on Teachers’ Day to meritorious teachers working in primary, middle and secondary schools.

How was the selection process conducted?

Self-nomination by teachers through an online portal (www.mhrd.gov.in)  were invited. First level scrutiny was done by District Selection Committee (DSC) headed by the district education officer. Based on prescribed selection criteria, DSC shortlisted three names and the same were forwarded to State Selection Committee.

Second level of scrutiny was done by State Selection Committee (SSC) headed by principal secretary/secretary of state education department. The SSC evaluated all the nominations and recommended names of shortlisted candidates, subject to the maximum number allotted to the states/UTs, and forwarded them to an independent national jury.

The national jury reviewed the list of 153 teachers as shortlisted by all the 36 State & UT Selection Committees and seven Organisation Selection Committees. This year, the candidates appeared before the jury through video conference and made presentations.

How are the applicants evaluated?

The guidelines were revised in 2018 making the process online.

The applicants are evaluated based on:

1) Objective criteria: The teachers will be awarded marks as per clearly given logic against each of the objective criteria. These criteria are given the weightage of 20 out of 100.

2) Criteria based on performance: Teachers will be awarded marks on criteria based on performance. For example, initiatives to improve learning outcomes, innovative experiments undertaken, organisation of extra and co-curricular activities, use of Teaching Learning Material, social mobility, ensuring experiential learning, unique ways to ensure physical education to students, etc. These criteria are given the weightage of 80 out of 100.
