TRIFED launches e-marketplace for tribal sellers

Tribal artisans will now be able to sell their products online as the government launched a dedicated e-marketplace to connect them to a larger national and international market.

Tribes India e-Marketplace

The Tribes India e-Marketplace, an initiative of the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED), is similar to selling products on e-commerce giants. The difference is just that it will be only for tribals.

The platform provides tribal suppliers with an omni-channel facility to sell their goods through their own retailers and distributors, TRIFED’s network of outlets and e-commerce partners as well as their own account in e-marketplace.

Around 5 lakh tribal items across 20,000 categories, including textiles, paintings, home decor items, jewellery, and metal crafts, will be available on the website. There will be local collection centres from where the products will be supplied across the country.

Showcasing tribal products from all over India, the e-marketplace is a platform which can be accessed on web and mobile by customers and registered tribal vendors.

It will also facilitate trade connecting tribals dependent on minor forest produces and medicinal plants to large buyers and manufacturers.

This will help ensure livelihoods for the tribal populations of our country and go a long way in making them self-reliant.

The products on the e-marketplace will undergo strict quality checks and a committee will fix prices for each item. Quality organic products will be delivered to buyers, who will have the option to return them within 15 days.

Tribal artisans will be trained and asked to register themselves as sellers on the website.

The objective is to bring around five lakh tribal artisans online.

The suppliers comprise tribal artisans, tribal self help groups and NGOs working with tribals.

What is TRIFED?

The Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) was established in 1987. It is a national-level apex organisation functioning under the administrative control of the ministry of tribal affairs. TRIFED has its head office in New Delhi and 15 regional offices across the country.

TRIFED aims for socio-economic development of tribals of the country by institutionalising the trade of Minor Forest Produce (MFP) and Surplus Agricultural Produce (SAP) collected/cultivated by them.

It plays the dual role of both a market developer and a service provider, empowering them with knowledge and tools to better their operations in a systematic, scientific manner and also assist them in developing their marketing approach.

It is involved actively in capacity building of the tribal people through sensitisation and the formation of Self Help Groups (SHGs). It is also engaged in training the tribals in several activities, so that they can effectively carry them out.

TRIFED has been striving to ameliorate the condition of the distressed and affected tribal people by putting in place several path-breaking initiatives, in addition to its existing flagship programmes and implementations.

The organisation assists in exploring and creating opportunities to market the developed products in national and international markets on a sustainable basis.

TRIBES India is the brand under which the sourced handcrafted products from the tribal people are sold. There are TRIBES India outlets across the country, making it a sustainable and reliable brand.
