Indian Army celebrates Infantry Day

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted all ranks of the Indian infantry on the occasion of Infantry Day, saying India is proud of the role played by them in protecting the nation.

• October 27 is celebrated as Infantry Day by the Indian Army as it was on this day that an Infantry Company of the First Battalion of the Sikh Regiment was airlifted from Delhi to Srinagar to liberate Kashmir from the invading tribals who were supported by Pakistan Army.

• This action was ordered by then PM Jawahar Lal Nehru after Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession acceding Jammu Kashmir to India.

• The main Combat Arms of Indian Army include the Infantry, Mechanised Infantry, Armoured Corps and Artillery.

• Infantry, also popularly known as the “Queen of the Battles”, is the largest fighting arm of the Indian Army. It is the backbone of the Indian Army and its soldiers bear the main brunt in any battle.

• Physical fitness, aggression and discipline are the basic qualities required in these men. The Infantry units of Indian Army have been modernised, equipped and trained to make the force amongst the best in the world.

Infantry School in Madhya Pradesh

The Infantry School in Mhow is the largest and oldest military training institution of the Indian Army and conducts courses. In addition, it is also conducting Infantry Clerks Training at Infantry Clerk Training Wing. The institution is not only training officers, Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and Other Ranks (ORs) of Infantry but also of other arms and services including personnel from friendly foreign countries, para military forces and civil armed police forces. 

The school trains more than 7,500 personnel annually, and some of its alumni have risen to the highest ranks in India and abroad. More than 30 countries have been sending their personnel to the Infantry School for training.
