Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban)
• The government launched Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) on October 2, 2014.
The Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) has two primary components of implementation:
1) Achieving 100 per cent open defecation-free (ODF) status.
2) 100 per cent scientific processing of solid waste.
• Since its launch in 2014, Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) has made significant progress in the area of both sanitation and solid waste management.
• As many as 4,360 cities have been declared ODF, 1,742 cities certified ODF+ and 538 cities certified ODF++ as per the ministry of housing and urban affairs sanitation protocols.
• This has been made possible through construction of more than 62 lakh individual household toilets and over 6 lakh community/public toilets, far exceeding the Mission’s targets.
