Mamata Banerjee sworn-in as Bengal CM for 3rd time

TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee was sworn-in as the chief minister of West Bengal for the third consecutive term after securing a massive mandate.

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mamata at a low-key ceremony at Raj Bhavan.

The TMC boss triggered a massive victory for her party winning 213 seats in the Bengal polls but herself lost by over 1,956 votes in the high-profile Nandigram constituency.

Mamata will have to get elected to the Assembly within six months of assuming office.

According to Article 164(4) of the Indian Constitution, a minister who for any period of six consecutive months is not a member of the legislature of the state shall at the expiration of that period cease to be a minister.

Elections were held in 292 constituencies of the 294-member assembly. Polling was countermanded in two constituencies Jangipur and Samsergan after candidates fell victim to a raging COVID-19 pandemic.

The Trinamool Congress romped home in West Bengal, pocketing 213 of the 292 assembly seats and secured a third straight term in office.

The BJP bagged 77 seats, while the Indian Secular Front (ISF), which contested with the symbol of the Rashtriya Secular Majlis Party, and an Independent, managed one seat each.

The Left and the Congress, which ruled the state for decades, will this time have no representation.

The TMC had clinched 211 seats in 2016 Assembly polls.
