PM Modi launches WHO mYoga app

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched WHO mYoga app while addressing the nation on the occasion of the seventh International Day of Yoga.

• The mYoga app has been developed by WHO in collaboration with Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga and the ministry of AYUSH.

• The app contains a collection of videos and audio files to teach and accompany yoga practice, and is an easy-to-use and free tool for people who are trying yoga for the first time or those who already practice yoga regularly. No special equipment is needed, and users can learn or practice for between 3 to 45 minutes.

• The app was created in response to the global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2014–2023, which aims to strengthen the quality, safety, and effectiveness of traditional and complementary medicine.

• The ministry of AYUSH and the World Health Organization (WHO) had jointly undertaken a project in mid-2019, focussing on mobile-Yoga.

• It envisaged the concept of the ‘BeHe@lthy, BeMobile’ (BHBM) under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to achieve Universal Health Coverage by 2030.

BeHe@lthy, BeMobile initiative

• BeHe@lthy, BeMobile initiative is a global partnership led by WHO which supports the scale up of mobile health (mHealth) technology within the scope of the National Health System to combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

• The initiative was set up by the WHO and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 2012. BHBM works with governments to scale up mobile health (mHealth) services, reaching over millions of people.

• It harnesses the reach of mobile phones to address the leading cause of deaths across the globe – non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and their risk factors – which are killing an estimated 41 million people each year, more than all other causes of death combined.

• BHBM provides cross-cutting health content which can be incorporated into diverse mHealth technologies along with technical support to achieve national scale.

• It also ensures integration with other digital health services by considering the broader national mHealth ecosystem. This ensures BHBM programmes become a sustainable part of the health system and promote health and wellbeing.

Manorama Yearbook app is now available on Google Play Store and iOS App Store
