• Former Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora has been invited to join the board of advisers for International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA).
• The institute is assisted by a 15-member board of advisers who are eminent personalities or experts from a wide variety of backgrounds.
• Sunil Arora was the 23rd Chief Election Commissioner of India from December 2, 2018 to April 12, 2021.
What is International IDEA?
• The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), established in 1995, is an inter-governmental organisation based in Stockholm, Sweden with a mission to support sustainable democracy worldwide.
• International IDEA currently has 34 member countries which include large and small, older and newer democracies from all continents.
• India has been one of the founding members of IDEA.
• International IDEA is governed by its Council of Member States.
• Membership in International IDEA is open to governments which demonstrate, by example in their own state, their commitment to the rule of law, human rights, the basic principles of democratic pluralism and strengthening democracy.
• It produces comparative, policy-friendly knowledge and provides technical assistance on issues relating to elections, parliaments, constitutions, money in politics and political representation, all under the umbrella of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
• It assesses the performance of democracies around the world through our unique Global State of Democracy Indices and reports.
The objectives of International IDEA are:
• Promote and advance sustainable democracy worldwide.
• Improve and consolidate democratic electoral processes worldwide.
• Broaden the understanding and promote the implementation and dissemination of the norms, rules and guidelines that apply to multi-party pluralism and democratic processes.
• Strengthen and support national capacity to develop the full range of democratic instruments.
• Provide a meeting place for exchanges between all those involved in electoral processes in the context of democratic institution-building.
• Increase knowledge and enhance learning about democratic electoral processes.
• Promote transparency and accountability, professionalism and efficiency in the electoral process in the context of democratic development.
