Explainer / What is Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA)?

The National Health Authority (NHA), under its flagship Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission scheme, has launched a revamped Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) mobile application.

What is Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA)?

• Under Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), a user can voluntarily generate Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) number.

• ABHA is a 14-digit unique ID in the digital health care ecosystem.

• The ABHA number can be used to link the user’s medical records, including doctor prescriptions, lab reports, hospital records, etc. It can also link all health care benefits ranging from public health programmes to insurance schemes to unique ABHA number.

• These records can be shared with registered health professionals and health service providers.

• It can also be used to access other digital health services whilst maintaining a common pool of medical history.

• Generation of ABHA is voluntary. In order to issue the ID, the system will collect certain basic details, including location.

• The user can generate their ABHA number using their Aadhaar number and some basic demographic details like name, date of birth, gender and address. If the user does not wish to use Aadhaar, they can use driving licence or mobile number to generate the ABHA number.

• Also, the user can request for permanent deletion or temporary deactivation of your ABHA number.

Revamped ABHA app

• The ABHA app, previously known as NDHM Health Records app, already has over 4 lakh downloads.

• The updated version of the ABHA app has a new user interface and added functionalities that enable individuals to access their health records anytime and anywhere.

• The ABHA mobile application enables an individual to create an easy to remember username that can be linked with the 14-digit randomly generated ABHA number.

• It also enables the users to link their health records created at Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) compliant health facility and view them on their smartphones.

• The app also allows users to upload their health records, such as diagnostic reports, prescriptions, and CoWIN vaccination certificates, to the ABDM-compliant health lockers and share those through the network.

• Additionally, ABHA mobile application has new functionalities that allow one to edit a profile, and link and unlink ABHA number with ABHA address.

• Other functionalities such as login via face authentication, fingerprint, biometric and the ability to scan a QR code at the counter of an ABDM-compliant facility for express registration shall be released soon.
