What is Bharat Rang Mahotsav?

• The National School of Drama (NSD) brings the 22nd edition of the Bharat Rang Mahotsav to Mumbai and will stage various plays on unsung heroes of the country’s freedom struggle.

• The NSD is organising the Bharat Rang Mahotsav, 2022 (Azadi Segment) as part of the government’s Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative to celebrate 75 years of Independence.

• As many as 30 plays are being showcased in Delhi, Bhubaneshwar, Varanasi, Amritsar, Bengaluru and Mumbai from July 16 to August 14. 

Bharat Rang Mahotsav

• Bharat Rang Mahotsav, the annual international theatre festival of India was first organised two decades ago by the National School of Drama to stimulate the growth and development of theatre across the country. 

• Originally a national festival showcasing the work of the most creative theatre workers in India, it has evolved to international scope, hosting theatre companies from around the world and riveted thousands of audiences who basked in the glory of heart-winning stories and superior performances.

• The first Bharat Rang Mahotsav was organised in 1999. 

National School of Drama

• The National School of Drama in New Delhi is a constituent unit of the Sangeet Natak Akademi which came into existence in 1959. It became an autonomous organisation in 1975 and is fully financed by the ministry of culture.

• It was registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. The apex governing body of the School is the NSD Society. 

• The chairman of NSD society is appointed by the President of India.

• Apart from theatre, the NSD alumni have often left an indelible mark in other media as well. 

• There are two performing wings of NSD – the Repertory Company and Theatre-in Education Company (TiE).

• Along with NSD in New Delhi, four centres have been established at Varanasi, Gangtok, Agartala and Bengaluru under consolidation of outreach programmes.
