Explainer / What is AYUSH Grid project?

• The ministry of AYUSH has signed an MoU with the ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) for providing technical support for digitalisation of the AYUSH sector under the AYUSH Grid project for a period of three years.

• This MoU is continuation of the earlier MoU, which was signed in 2019.

• It was decided that both ministries will continue to work in collaboration and MeitY and organisations under it will extend all technical support required for the AYUSH Grid project including adoption of emerging technologies.

What is AYUSH Grid?

• The AYUSH Grid project was initiated in 2018 for creating a comprehensive IT backbone for the entire sector.

• Digitalisation of the entire AYUSH sector will lead to its transformation in fields of health care delivery at all levels, including research, education, various health programmes and drug regulations.

• This will be beneficial for all stakeholders of AYUSH, including citizens of the country, and in turn will help to achieve various national and global goals in health care.

• The most significant among the different initiatives implemented so far in the project is the AYUSH Health Management Information System (A-HMIS).

• A-HMIS is a comprehensive IT platform to effectively manage all functions of health care delivery systems and patient care in Ayush facilities.

• Originally based on THERAN (THE Research Application Nexus), an HMIS developed in-house by the Siddha Research Council, Chennai, the AHMIS has now emerged into a robust, cloud-based information system used by nearly 100 clinical establishments of the AYUSH ministry.

• Another success of AYUSH Grid is the development and implementation of the AYUSH Sanjivani mobile app and the Yoga Locator mobile app.

• AYUSH Grid will enable the ministry to generate real time data covering all aspects of AYUSH systems including services, products, education, production, market size, demand supply mapping, etc which will enable policy makers, regulators, researchers to make strategy accordingly.

• From a user’s perspective, AYUSH Grid will be a central platform offering multiple IT services for all systems of medicines under AYUSH — Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa and Homeopathy — across functional areas, namely, health care delivery, education, research, capacity building, drug licensing and standardisation along with media outreach.

The components of AYUSH Grid initiative will cover all the verticals of the sector like:

• Health Services

• Education

• AYUSH Research

• Central Sector and Centrally Sponsored Schemes

• Training Programmes

• Citizen Centric Services

• Drug Licencing Portal

• Media Outreach.

• The AYUSH Grid is steadily developing through its constituent projects. It is expected to emerge as a comprehensive IT backbone serving eight lakh AYUSH physicians and nearly 50 crore citizens soon.
