• India and the United Kingdom signed and exchanged letters for formalising the Young Professionals Scheme at an event in London on January 9.
• The scheme will allow 3,000 young Indians and Britons to live, study and work in each other’s countries for up to two years.
• The scheme was conceived as part of an India-UK Migration and Mobility MoU signed in May 2021.
• Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the launch of the scheme at the G20 Summit in Bali in November 2022 where both the leaders met each other for the first time.
• Indian high commissioner to the UK Vikram Doraiswami and Matthew Rycroft, permanent secretary at the UK home office, exchanged letters about the scheme.
• The scheme will allow graduates aged 18 to 30 to stay in the other country for up to two years without needing to have a job in hand. They can work, study, do voluntary work, be self-employed or start a business — but they have to fund the trip themselves and find their own accommodation.
• The scheme allows for exchange visas for up to 3,000 individuals per year.
