R Madhavan gets nominated as president of FTII

• Actor-filmmaker R. Madhavan was nominated as president of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune and chairman of its governing council.

• The actor, known for his films across languages including ‘Alai Payuthey’, ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Vikram Vedha’, will succeed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur as FTII president.

• Madhavan turned director with his national award-winning film ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’.

Film and Television Institute of India

• The Film Institute of India was set up in 1960 in the premises of the erstwhile Prabhat Studios in Pune.

• Following the addition of the Television Wing in 1971, the Institute was re-designated as the Film and Television Institute of India.

• It was registered as a Society in October 1974 under the Registration of Societies Act, 1860. 

• The Institute provides higher and professional education and technical expertise in the art and technique of filmmaking and television production and is seen as a centre of excellence for training.

• The FTII functions as an autonomous body under the ministry of information and broadcasting. 

• The FTII Society is headed by a president who is a well known personality from film and television, arts or academics.

• The FTII Society consists of eminent personalities connected with film, television, communication, culture, alumni of the Institute and ex-officio government members.

• The Governing Council is constituted by election from among the members of the Society. 

• The Governing Council, as the apex body of the FTII, is responsible for making all major policy decisions of the Institute in consonance with its aims and objectives.

• The Governing Council appoints the Academic Council (AC) and the Standing Finance Committee (SFC), who are responsible for advising the FTII in policy matters related to academic affairs and financial matters.

• The president of the Society also functions as the chairman of each of the bodies, the Governing Council, the Academic Council, and the Standing Finance Committee.
