The Delhi High Court asked expelled TMC Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra to approach the Directorate of Estates with a request for allowing her to continue to occupy the government quarters allotted to her which was cancelled after her expulsion.
Directorate of Estates
• Directorate of Estates is an attached office of the ministry of housing and urban affairs.
• It was established in 1944.
• It is mandated to administer and manage the estates of the government of India in Delhi, its eight regional offices located at Chandigarh, Chennai, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur and Shimla and 31 other locations across the country.
• The estates of the government of India include the government residential accommodations, government office space accommodation, government commercial space accommodation, venues for conclaves and ceremonies.
• The core service of the Directorate of Estates is to administer the allotment of government residential accommodation to the officers/officials of eligible offices of central government.
• It also administers the booking of holiday homes and touring officers’ hostels of government of India, which are maintained by Central Public Works Department.
• All the holiday homes and touring officers’ hostels have various types of rooms to cater to the different requirements of guests.
The Directorate of Estates administers the following Acts and Rules:
i) The Requisition and Acquisition of Immovable Property Act,1952
ii) The Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act,1971
iii) The Requisitioning and Acquisition of Immovable Property Rules,1953
iv) The Ministers Residences Rules,1962
v) The Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Rules, 1971
vi) The Central Government General Pool Residential Accommodation Rules, 2017.
• In December 2020, the Directorate of Estates launched e-Sampada. The application provides a single window for services including allotment for over one lakh government residential accommodations, office space allotment to government organisations.
