What is International Purple Festival in Goa?

• In a first, a national toll-free helpline catering to all disability-related queries was launched during the International Purple Festival in Goa.

• The helpline — 1800 22 2014 — aims to facilitate assistance for individuals with disabilities.

• This initiative stands out as the first IVRS (Interactive Voice Response System) helpline dedicated to addressing disability-related queries, covering 153 categories across 21 disabilities.

• The helpline’s services include information on disability prevention, management, educational opportunities in special schools, and details about central and state government schemes.

• Additionally, it offers insights into vocational training, job opportunities, and specifics about special employment exchanges.

• The International Purple Fest Goa 2024 is a celebration emphasizing diversity, inclusivity, and empowerment on a global scale.

• It is organised by the State Commissioner’s Office for Persons with Disabilities, in collaboration with the Directorate of Social Welfare, government of Goa, and supported by the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment.

• The fest aims to showcase the talents of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) through engaging performances in music, dance, and entertainment.

Why purple?

• Purple is considered as the colour of disability inclusion.

• Purple is often associated with power, dignity, and independence. These qualities align with the goals of the disability rights movement, which seeks to empower individuals with disabilities and promote their equal participation in society.
