• Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated NTPC’s 300 megawatt (MW) Nokhra Solar Project to the nation on February 16.
• Spread over 1,550 acres in Bikaner district of Rajasthan, the project is being executed by NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) under the CPSU Scheme (Phase-II) with an investment of Rs 1,803 crore for green power.
• The project is expected to generate 730 million units (MU) green energy per year. This project will not only light up over 1.3 lakh households, but will also help in restricting 6 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission every year.
• Overall, the project is expected to offset CO2 emissions to the tune of 15 million tonnes in a span of 25 years.
• Over 13 lakh solar PV modules have been installed in this project under the flagship Make in India programme.
NTPC
• NTPC Limited, formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation Limited, was established in 1975.
• Under the ministry of power, NTPC is India’s largest power utility with an installed capacity of 74 GW (including JVs).
• From fossil fuels it has forayed into generating electricity via hydro, nuclear and renewable energy sources.
• Its own stations include 27 coal based, 7 gas based, 1 hydro, 15 solar and 1 small hydro project. Under JVs and subsidiaries, NTPC has 9 coal based, 4 gas based, 8 hydro based and 20 renewable energy projects.
• NTPC is India’s first energy company to declare its energy compact goals as part of the UN High-level Dialogue on Energy (HLDE).
• To strengthen its core business, the corporation has diversified into the fields of consultancy, power trading, training of power professionals, rural electrification, ash utilisation and coal mining as well.
• NTPC became a Maharatna company in May 2010.
• NGEL is a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC with an operational green capacity of over 3.4 GW and 26 GW in pipeline including 7 GW under implementation.
