• The first Foreign Office Consultations between India and Cabo Verde was held in Praia on March 18.
• The consultations encompassed various facets of collaboration, including political cooperation, economic partnership, development assistance, cultural exchanges, and cooperation in multilateral forums.
• The consultations provided an opportunity for both sides to coordinate their positions on regional and global issues of mutual interest, and both sides firmly agreed to enhance their cooperation in the multilateral fora.
India-Cabo Verde relations
• India opened its Mission in Cabo Verde in 2023, which has renewed the momentum in the bilateral relations.
• India and Cabo Verde share long-standing ties of friendship and collaboration.
• The bilateral trade between India and Cabo Verde has potential to achieve high levels.
• India’s exports to Cabo Verde mainly consist of drugs & pharmaceuticals, cereals, vehicle parts and electrical components.
• India mainly imports iron and steel and other metal scrap, mainly copper and aluminum.
Cabo Verde
• Cape Verde formally achieved its independence from Portugal in 1975.
• The Republic of Cabo Verde changed its official name from the Republic of Cape Verde in October 2013.
• Located 500km off the west coast of Africa, Cabo Verde is a ten-island archipelago, nine of which are inhabited. With a population of about 491,233 (2021 Census), only 10 per cent of its territory is classified as arable land and mineral resources are limited.
• The fragmentation of its territory creates significant connectivity issues, as well as challenges for service delivery, including energy, water, education, and health.
• The capital of Cabo Verde is Praia.
• Although it has few natural resources, fish are plentiful.
• Cabo Verde’s economy is driven by tourism grounded in year-round attractive weather, beautiful beaches, stable democracy, limited security risks and proximity to Europe.
• Cabo Verde has witnessed significant economic progress since 1990, driven in large part by the rapid development of tourism (25 per cent of GDP), coupled with considerable social development due to strong social policies since the 1970s.
• Until 2019, Cabo Verde was considered one of the champions among Sub-Saharan African countries in terms of poverty reduction, but is currently challenged by the impacts of COVID-19 and the Ukraine crisis.
• The country was under one-party rule from independence until 1990. The first multi-party elections were held in 1991.
