India inks MoU on cooperation in sports sector with Saint Kitts and Nevis

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya discussed various areas of cooperation in sports matters with Foreign Affairs Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis Denzil Douglas.  

Both the sides signed an MoU on cooperation in sports sector.

The salient areas of cooperation under this MoU are:

• Training and competition of athletes and athletic teams.

• Training and technical assistance for coaches.

• Exchange programmes and visits of sports leaders, officials, sports administrators, professionals, technicians and sports support personnel.

• Training, exchange and attachment programmes for sports sciences personnel and other development assistance in sports sciences.

• Collaboration in the area of sports research & development in training.

Saint Kitts and Nevis

• Saint Kitts and Nevis is a two-island country in the eastern Caribbean Sea. Both islands were formed by volcanic activity and are mountainous. 

• Saint Kitts is a fertile island with mainly black sandy beaches. Nevis is surrounded by coral reefs and has silver beaches.

• It is the smallest country in the Western Hemisphere both in terms of area and population.

• In December 1986, Saint Christopher and Nevis changed its name to Saint Kitts and Nevis.

• Saint Kitts and Nevis is 101 square miles with a population of 53,104 persons.

• Basseterre is the capital located on the larger island of Saint Kitts, and Charlestown is the capital of the smaller island of Nevis, which is located two miles away, across a shallow channel called The Narrows.

• Booby Island, a bird nesting site lies between the two islands.

• Mount Liamuiga is the most northwesterly mountain and is the highest peak on Saint Kitts.

• The country gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1983 but still recognises British monarch as its Head of State. 

• The economy is characterised by its dominant tourism, agriculture, and light manufacturing industries.

India-Saint Kitts and Nevis Relations

• Saint Kitts and Nevis and India have maintained friendly and cordial relations.

• Saint Kitts and Nevis is generally supportive of India’s positions in international fora.

• Trade with India is low at $5.1 million for 2023-24.

• Most of the export and import items were scrap metal in the shape of ships, boats and floating structures. Their imports included pharmaceuticals, auto parts, apparel and clothing, toys, games, etc.

• Many NRIs are involved in trading at duty free zone and restaurant business. About 200 Indian nationals and 100 PIOs are estimated to live in Saint Kitts & Nevis. 

• India being a Commonwealth country, its nationals do not require visa to enter Saint Kitts & Nevis.

• The country has signed and ratified the Framework Agreement on International Solar Alliance.
