Minister of State for Agriculture Bhagirath Choudhary unveiled Krishi-Decision Support System (Krishi-DSS), a geospatial platform that will offer real-time information on crop conditions, weather patterns, water resources, and soil health.
What is Krishi-DSS?
• Krishi-DSS is a first-of-its-kind geospatial platform specifically designed for Indian agriculture.
• Krishi-DSS, developed using technology similar to the government’s Gati Shakti initiative, will utilise satellite imagery to deliver early warnings about potential disasters and extreme weather events.
• The Krishi-DSS platform has been developed using RISAT-1A and Visualisation of Earth observation Data and Archival System (VEDAS) of the Department of Space.
Features of Krishi-DSS:
• The system will aid in crop mapping, monitoring, and promoting crop rotation and diversification.
• It will provide data on crop patterns across regions and track crop conditions throughout various growth stages.
• The platform provides seamless access to comprehensive data including satellite images, weather information, reservoir storage, groundwater levels and soil health information, which can be easily accessed from anywhere at any time.
• Krishi-DSS includes several advanced modules designed to support comprehensive agricultural management.
• With crop mapping and monitoring, researchers will be able to understand cropping patterns by analysing parcel-level crop maps over different years.
• With field parcel segmentation, it will help to understand cropping patterns for targeted interventions of each parcel.
• This information helps in understanding crop rotation practices and promotes sustainable agriculture by encouraging the cultivation of diverse crops.
• Drought monitoring will give near real-time information on various indicators, such as soil moisture, water storages, crop condition, dry spells, etc, while crop weather watch will give information about how weather is impacting the crops, crop harvest status, crop residue burning etc.
• By integrating various data sources available on Krishi-DSS, various farmer-centric solutions can be developed, such as right individual advisories to farmers, early disaster warning like pest attacks, heavy rains, hailstorms, etc.
