On Dandi March anniversary, PM Modi pays tributes to its participants

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to the participants of the Dandi March led by Mahatma Gandhi in 1930, describing it as a defining chapter in India’s freedom struggle.

Key facts on Dandi March:

• The Dandi March, also known as the Salt March and the Salt Satyagraha, led by Mahatma Gandhi, was a milestone in the Civil Disobedience Movement. 

• It started as a non-violent protest against the unjust salt tax imposed by the British government in India. 

• Through a series of laws, the British government prohibited the Indians from producing or selling salt independently, for which they were required to buy imported and heavily taxed salt. 

• On March 12, 1930, Mahatma Gandhi started the historic march along with his followers from Sabarmati Ashram to the coastal town of Dandi. 

• They walked for 24 days and reached Dandi on April 5, 1930. Gandhiji covered almost 388 km during the march.

• On the morning of April 6, 1930, Gandhiji and his followers broke the Salt Act by producing salt from sea water. 

• The march garnered massive popular support and is considered a seminal turn in India’s Independence movement.

• The story about the march spread like wildfire in the country, people from all over India started making salt and even sold them in local markets.
