• The 10th round of Foreign Office Consultations between India and Slovenia was held in New Delhi.
• During the consultations, both sides undertook a comprehensive review of the progress made in various aspects of bilateral cooperation and agreed to strengthen the bilateral partnership for mutual benefit.
• Discussions focused on key areas including political relations, trade and investment, science, technology and innovation, space, digitalisation, artificial intelligence (AI), migration and mobility, defence, agriculture as well as people-to-people exchanges and cultural ties.
• The two sides also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
India-Slovenia Relations
• Slovenia attained independence from erstwhile Yugoslavia on June 25, 1991.
• India recognised Slovenia on May 11, 1992.
• India opened its resident Mission in Ljubljana in February 2007. Slovenia opened its resident mission in New Delhi in August 2002.
• Foreign Office Consultations, Joint Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation (JCTEC), Science & Technology Cooperation, Slovenian Parliamentary Friendship Group are key elements of the bilateral framework between both countries.
Important agreements and MoUs signed between both sides include:
i) Agreement on setting up Joint Committee on Bilateral Trade & Cooperation (1993)
ii) Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (1995)
iii) Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (2003)
iv) Air Services Agreement (2004).
• India and Slovenia signed an agreement in 1996 for cooperation in the fields of culture, arts, education, sports and mass media.
• The bilateral trade between both sides recorded $894.71 million in 2023-24.
• The main items of exports from India are organic chemicals, pharmaceutical products, electrical machinery and equipment, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances.
• The main items of imports into India were boilers, organic chemicals, electrical machinery and equipment, paper and paperboard, articles of paper, optical, photographic, cinematographic measuring, medical and surgical instruments.
