15 foreign universities to open campuses in India this academic year

• The University of Liverpool is set to open a campus in Bengaluru and will welcome its first batch of students in August 2026.

• Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan handed over the Letter of Intent to the varsity administration on May 26.

• The move comes after the University of Liverpool received formal approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to open the first foreign university campus in Bengaluru.

• Consistently ranked in the top 175 universities worldwide, University of Liverpool is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of the UK’s leading research universities

• The University of Southampton was the first UK university to receive approval and is set to start offering academic programs in Gurgaon by July 2025.

• Pradhan announced that 15 foreign universities will be coming to India by this academic year. 

Internationalisation of Education

• The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) was framed and approved by the government of India to transform and improve the quality of education in the country. 

• One of the key aspects of NEP 2020 is “Internationalisation of Education”, which aims to promote and share best academic and research practices through interactions among diverse education systems.

• In alignment with the vision of NEP 2020, University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued “UGC (Setting up and Operation of Campuses of Foreign Higher Educational Institutions in India) Regulations 2023” to facilitate the establishment of branch campuses of Foreign Higher Educational Institutions (FHEIs) in India.

• Two Australian universities — Deakin and Wollongong — already have campuses in the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).

• Queen’s University Belfast and Coventry University have also received approval for setting up campuses in GIFT City.

• Chicago’s Illinois Institute of Technology, which became the first US university to get a nod to set up its campus in India, will be established in Mumbai in 2026.
