What is Jatan initiative?

• The National Portal and Digital Repository for Museums of India are designed and developed by C-DAC, Pune.

• It provides an all pervasive and integrated access to theme-based collections and artefacts irrespective of the physical and geographical locations of museums.

• The virtual museums are a wealth of knowledge accessible from anywhere and at any time for students, teachers, researchers and tourists.

• The digital collections are created using ‘Jatan Virtual Museum Builder’ software.

• They are integrated in the national digital repository for giving public access through the national portal.

• The portal was inaugurated on October 21, 2014.

• Jatan provides virtual access to any artefacts on display or in the reserve collection of the museums.

• Having a digital record not only for external use but for keeping data for internal use such as tracking its location, conservation details, etc.

• Jatan Virtual Museum Builder is the software being used for digitising records of antiquities that are displayed in a common portal for the public view.

• It enables upkeep, research and making antiquities of Indian museums more accessible and visible to the world.
