India, France to begin ‘Garuda’ air exercise from November 16 to 27

• Indian Air Force (IAF) and French Air and Space Force (FASF) will conduct Garuda exercise from November 16 to 27 at the Mont-de-Marsan Air Base.

• During the drills, the IAF’s Su-30 MKI fighter jets will conduct joint operations with the French Air and Space Force’s Rafale aircraft in a simulated combat setting.

• The first edition of the exercise was held in 2003.

• The primary objective of this joint endeavour is to enhance interoperability between the two forces, facilitate an exchange of best practices, and further solidify their defence cooperation.

• The exercise underscores the deep strategic partnership India and France share, which spans defence, technology, and security.

Bilateral exercises with France:

• Varuna - Bilateral naval exercise between Indian Navy and French Navy.

• Garuda - Bilateral exercise between Indian Air Force (IAF) and French Air and Space Force (FASF).

• Shakti - Bilateral exercise between the armies of India and France.
