PM Modi visits Adwa Victory Monument in Addis Ababa

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid a wreath and paid his respects at the Adwa Victory Monument in Addis Ababa.

• The Battle of Adwa, fought in March 1896, was a historic clash between the Ethiopian Empire, led by Emperor Menelik II, and the Kingdom of Italy, under General Oreste Baratieri.

• Taking place near the town of Adwa in northern Ethiopia, the battle marked a decisive Ethiopian victory and a major turning point in African history. 

• The conflict arose from a dispute over the Treaty of Wuchale, where differing interpretations led Italy to claim Ethiopia as a protectorate, which Menelik II firmly rejected. 

• The memorial is a tribute to the enduring spirit of Adwa’s heroes and the country’s proud legacy of freedom, dignity and resilience.

• The PM’s visit to the memorial highlights a special historical connection between India and Ethiopia.
