Shah launches ‘Bharat Taxi’ in Delhi-NCR, Gujarat

• Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah launched Bharat Taxi on February 5.

• It will start services in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat initially and pan-India in the next three years.

• Customers can hail cars, three-wheelers and two-wheelers through the platform.

• Shah said the platform would keep Rs 20 out of every Rs 100 earned, and Rs 80 would go to the drivers’ bank accounts.

What is Bharat Taxi?

• Bharat Taxi is India’s first cooperative-led ride-hailing platform.

• Bharat Taxi platform will be run by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Ltd, which was registered on June 6, 2025, under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002.

• The platform operates on a zero-commission and surge-free pricing model, with direct distribution of profits to drivers, presenting an indigenous alternative to foreign investment-based aggregator platforms.

• Bharat Taxi is a cooperative-owned digital mobility platform aimed at providing safe, transparent and affordable transportation while empowering driver-members through collective ownership and participation.

• The government has extended institutional support for Bharat Taxi in a major push to cooperative-led economic growth and people-centric urban mobility.

• The platform began pilot operations on December 2 in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat.

• The initiative is supported by leading national cooperative institutions including the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Krishak Bharati Cooperative Limited (KRIBHCO), Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul), National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), and the National Cooperative Export Limited.

• Conceived as a community-owned alternative to conventional aggregator-based mobility services, Bharat Taxi seeks to redefine urban transport by placing drivers at the centre of the platform.

• The model enables driver-members to participate as owners, ensures fair remuneration, and promotes ethical service delivery, while offering commuters a reliable and cost-effective transport option.

• The payment made by the customer will be transferred directly, immediately and automatically into the driver’s account.

• Under the MoU with the National e-Governance Division (NeGD), MeitY, advisory and technical support will be provided to Bharat Taxi under the Digital India framework, enabling integration with DigiLocker, UMANG, and API Setu.

• This will provide drivers with paperless onboarding, unified access to government services, secure interoperable operations, cashless payments, and improved operational efficiency.

• So far, more than 2.5 lakh drivers in Delhi-NCR have joined Bharat Taxi, and more than 8.5 lakh passengers have become part of this platform.

• IFFCO-TOKIO General Insurance Company will provide personal accident and health insurance coverage to drivers associated with Bharat Taxi.

• There is a separate window for ‘Sarathi Didi’ in the app, through which any woman who registers will be picked up only by ‘Sarathi Didis’.
