To mark the 40th foundation day of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Union Minister Jitendra Singh launched ‘SUJVIKA’ AI-driven biotech product data portal on February 24.
What is the purpose of SUJVIKA portal?
• Biotechnology’s integration with digital tools, including AI, will enhance research efficiency, reduce timelines and improve precision in areas such as gene sequencing, diagnostics and drug discovery.
• SUJVIKA is a trade statistics digital intelligence platform.
• The portal contains import data of verified biotechnology products in a structured and accessible format, providing insights into biochemical products, industrial enzymes and other biotechnology imports.
• It enables researchers, startups and industry to identify high-value and high-volume imports, assess import dependency and prioritise indigenisation, and research and development efforts.
• The portal also supports evidence-based planning and promotes public-private partnerships for strengthening domestic biomanufacturing.
Formation of Department of Biotechnology (DBT)
• The Indian science and technology policy makers, especially the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet in 1981-82, strongly suggested the creation of a National Biotechnology Board (NBTB) which was formed in 1982 under the chairmanship of Dr. M.S. Swaminathan to provide a focused impetus to the emerging field of biotechnology.
• The Board consisted of several eminent scientists who lent their support to the functioning of the Board.
• The Board’s mandate was to encourage research, develop infrastructure and build skilled human resources in biotechnology.
• To further boost this emerging field in India, the government of India took the decision to create a separate Department of Biotechnology (DBT) in February 1986.
• The DBT aims to be at the forefront of the biotech revolution, which possesses a potential for socioeconomic transformation far exceeding even the IT Revolution of the past decades.
• The DBT is committed to support the National Development Programmes (NDPs) and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the creation of biotechnology tools and technologies that address the problems of agricultural productivity, food production, nutrition security, healthcare and environmental sustainability.
• The DBT has also renewed its focus on biomanufacturing as a tool to provide new and emerging products and services at affordable prices, generate employment opportunities, and make India one of the top players in the world BioEconomy.
• The DBT also plays a crucial role in guiding policy, regulation, and legislation for ensuring the safe, responsible, and peaceful use of biotechnology.
