• A fossil bed belonging to the middle-to-late Holocene period was discovered at Panaiyur area in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district, Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav said on April 27.
• The Holocene period is the current geological epoch that began approximately 11,700 years ago after the last major ice age.
• Fossils from this era are particularly valuable because they provide a relatively recent snapshot of the ecosystem, allowing scientists to correlate findings with human activity and climatic changes that shaped the present-day environment.
• The site was revealed after torrential rains in 2023, and subsequently, the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) conducted a survey at the spot.
• The assessment confirmed a newly discovered fossil bed dating back to the Holocene period, which significantly enriches the Quaternary fossil record of India.
• This discovery is important because it helps us better understand India’s ancient wildlife, environment, and climate, the Environment Minister said.
