Legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja dies at 84

• Legendary filmmaker P. Bharathiraja passed away in Chennai on June 10. He was 84.

• The actor-director was known as a trendsetter for his choice of stories and their treatment.

• He was affectionately revered as “Iyakkunar Imayam” (the pinnacle among directors). 

• He was a recipient of six National Film Awards, six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and numerous other accolades.

• In 2004, the government honoured him with Padma Shri.

• Bharathiraja was born on July 17, 1941, in Allinagaram, Theni district.

• In the late 1970s, Tamil cinema was heavily dominated by indoor studio sets, high-decibel theatrical melodramas, and urban-centric narratives.

Bharathiraja shot to fame with his debut directorial venture ‘16 Vayathinile’ in 1977. 

• Kamal Haasan and Sridevi were the lead pair, with Rajinikanth playing the villain in the film. 

• By taking his cameras out of the studio floors, he introduced mainstream audiences to an authentic rural landscape. 

• The film became a cultural phenomenon and established a new lexicon for commercial filmmaking.

• Over a prolific career spanning nearly five decades, Bharathiraja helmed more than 40 feature films across Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi.

• He demonstrated a remarkable stylistic range, moving effortlessly from rural dramas to psychological thrillers.

• His pathbreaking films in Tamil include ‘Sigappu Rojakkal’ (1978), ‘Alaigal Oivathillai’ (1981), ‘Mudhal Mariyathai’ (1985) and ‘Karuthamma’ (1994).

• In the latter half of his career, Bharathiraja transitioned to the front of the camera, reinventing himself as a formidable character actor. 

• His powerful screen presence and distinct dialogue delivery earned him widespread critical acclaim from younger generations of filmgoers.
