Modi becomes India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister

• Narendra Modi reached the milestone of becoming India’s longest-serving Prime Minister on June 10.

• With an unbroken tenure of 4,399 days in office, PM Modi surpassed the record of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India.

• Nehru’s stint from 1947 to 1952 was as head of an interim government, as elections were not held until 1952.

• Nehru was elected to the post in 1952 and took the oath of office on May 13. He served until May 27, 1964 — a tenure of 4,398 days.

• Indira Gandhi, India’s first woman PM, had a tenure of 14 years, more than that of Modi, but her prime ministership was not uninterrupted.

• Modi is currently serving his third consecutive term as the prime minister.

• Modi first assumed office on May 26, 2014, following the BJP-led NDA’s landslide victory in the general elections.

• His second term began on May 30, 2019, after getting re-elected with a bigger mandate. His third consecutive term started on June 9, 2024.
