• Noida International Airport (NIA) commenced commercial flight operations on June 15.
• This milestone marks the arrival of a new gateway to the National Capital Region and western Uttar Pradesh.
• IndiGo became the first airline to operate from Noida International Airport, with the inaugural flight arriving from Lucknow at 7:58 am, and the first departure taking off for Bengaluru shortly thereafter.
• Villagers from the Jewar region, whose land was acquired for the development of the airport, boarded one of the first passenger flights from the newly operational airport.
DXN is the IATA code for the airport
• The airport’s official code is DXN.
• It is Noida International Airport’s official International Air Transport Association (IATA) location identifier or three–letter code.
• The IATA codes are unique to each individual airport and serve as essential identifiers for airports globally to prevent any ambiguity between countries and cities.
• These codes are featured not only on passengers’ travel documents but are a crucial element in various other communications on a daily basis.
• From flight schedules, ticketing, and baggage handling from one airport to another, to streamlining and regulating communication, operations, and logistics, IATA codes help bring the identity of an airport alive at each level.
Key points on Noida airport:
• The airport, envisioned as a major international gateway for the National Capital Region (NCR), represents a major step in strengthening the country’s airport infrastructure and enhancing regional and international connectivity.
• Strategically located along the Yamuna Expressway, Noida International Airport is planned as a multi-modal transport hub with seamless integration across road, rail, metro, and regional transit systems, ensuring efficient connectivity for passengers and cargo.
• Noida International Airport has been developed as the second international airport for the Delhi NCR region, complementing Indira Gandhi International Airport.
• Together, the two airports will function as an integrated aviation system, easing congestion, expanding passenger capacity, and positioning Delhi NCR among leading global aviation hubs.
• Noida International Airport is among the largest greenfield airport projects in India.
• The project, initiated in 2019 under a public-private partnership model by the Uttar Pradesh government, was awarded to Switzerland-based Zurich Airport International AG, with construction carried out by its local subsidiary, Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd.
• Phase I of Noida International Airport has been developed at a total investment of around Rs 11,200 crore under PPP model.
• Spread over more than 1,300 hectares, the airport will initially have a passenger handling capacity of 12 million passengers per annum (MPPA), with scalability up to 70 MPPA upon full development.
• It features a 3,900-meter runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft, along with modern navigation systems including Instrument Landing System (ILS) and advanced airfield lighting to support efficient, all-weather, round-the-clock operations.
• The airport is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing regional connectivity, supporting tourism and trade, and contributing to economic growth across Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh and northern India.
