‘Tripura Sarinda’ gets GI tag

• ‘Tripura Sarinda’, an indigenous stringed musical instrument, has been accorded the geographical indication (GI) tag.

• The announcement was made by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha.

• The GI tag for the Tripura Sarinda represents a vital step toward preserving and promoting the state’s rich cultural legacy while gaining wider recognition for its unique folk art forms.

• With the addition of the Tripura Sarinda, the total number of GI-tagged products from the state now stands at four.

• Tripura’s Queen Pineapple, Risa, and Matabari Peda had also been granted GI status.

• Matabari Peda, a dairy-based sweet, is traditionally offered as prasad at Tripura Sundari Temple in Udaipur, Gomati district.

• Risa is a handwoven cloth worn by the indigenous communities of the state.

• Tripura is also known for its Queen and Kew varieties of pineapple, which thrive in the state’s hilly terrain and humid climatic conditions with minimal use of chemical inputs, distinguished by their golden-yellow appearance, unique flavour, and aroma when fully ripe.
