India defeat England in historic first women’s Test at Lord’s

• India defeated England by 270 runs in the first women’s test match in the history of Lord's cricket ground on July 13.

• The victory marked India’s second-highest win by margin of runs in Women’s Tests, the fourth biggest overall.

• The record for the highest margin of win in the format dates back to 2023 when India had trumped England by 347 runs in Navi Mumbai.

• Lord’s, cricket’s most iconic ground, has been hosting international matches since 1884, and staged its first women’s international in 1976, a 50-over match between England and Australia.

• It took another 50 years for a women’s test, scheduled for four days from July 10, to be held at the ground owned by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

• Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma struck fifties in the first innings and helped India to post 285.

• In reply, England posted only 170 as 22-year-old Indian medium-pacer Kranti Gaud took five wickets for 37 runs, becoming the first woman to have her name inscribed on the Lord’s test honours board, reserved for those who score a century, take five wickets in an innings or 10 in a test match at the ground.

• Indian wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia (113) scored a century and also joined the list on board.

• India declared at 341-7 on the third day, setting a target of 457.

• Chasing a target of 457, England were all out for 186.

• The Test marked final international appearances for England’s Tammy Beaumont and Heather Knight.

• Key members of the England squad that won the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup at this very venue in 2017, the duo have called it quits from all formats of the game.
