Anahat Singh becomes first Indian to win World Junior Squash Championship

• Anahat Singh became the first Indian to be crowned the World Squash Junior Champion after defeating Egypt’s Ruqayya Salem (11-3, 11-7, 11-9) in Ontario on July 25.

• Singh, a bronze medallist in the previous year, enjoyed an impressive run throughout the tournament.

• The 18-year-old became the first Indian to reach the World Junior final since Joshna Chinappa in 2005.

• Despite leading by two games, the third initially threatened to swing in Salem’s favour as the Egyptian moved into an 8-6 lead.

• The Indian No.1 clawed her way back to seal the third game 11-9 and secure a historic victory.

• In the men’s final, Egypt’s Mohamad Zakaria defeated his compatriot Adam Hawal in straight games.

• Zakaria became the first men’s player ever to win the World Junior title three times.
