Navy launches next generation patrol vessel ‘Shruti’

• The Indian Navy launched Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) ‘Shruti’ at GRSE, Kolkata on August 11.

• The NGOPVs are significantly larger and more capable than conventional offshore patrol vessels, with enhanced endurance and firepower.

• The construction of 11 NGOPVs is being undertaken concurrently at two shipyards — Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), Kolkata.

• ‘Shachi’, the first of the NGOPVs, was launched at GSL, Goa on March 31, 2026. 

• GRSE launched ‘Sanghmitra’ on May 20, 2026.

• These indigenously designed and built ships will augment the existing vessels for multi-domain operations, such as maritime surveillance, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) and anti-piracy missions. 

• The NGOPVs will also undertake mine warfare missions and support special operations.

• These ships derive their name from India’s rich heritage, with the new ship being named ‘Shruti’ referring to four Vedas.

• The crest design of the ship depicts the constellation of Ursa Major and a red and white coloured light house.

• The launch marks yet another significant milestone in the Indian Navy’s pursuit towards indigenous shipbuilding.
