India to procure Javelin anti-tank guided missile systems from US

• The Indian Army has signed an agreement with the United States to purchase Javelin anti-tank missile systems, the US Embassy in India said on August 28.

• US Ambassador Sergio Gor said the agreement reflects a bilateral defence partnership that is growing deeper, more capable, and more consequential.

• The Javelin system is an advanced, medium-range, fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile. 

• It is used by the US Army, US Marine Corps, and numerous international customers and is designed for use against a wide array of targets, including armoured vehicles and fortified positions.

• Javelin is a man-portable and platform-employed multi-purpose weapon system.

• It is developed and produced by the Javelin Joint Venture (JJV) between Raytheon and Lockheed Martin.

• Javelin’s optimised trajectory, automated guidance and high penetration capability provides unparalleled performance against heavy and light armor, as well as “soft” and irregular targets.

• Using “fire-and-forget” technology, the weapon guides itself to the target without external commands, controls or target designation – allowing soldiers and platform assets to rapidly engage a second target, take cover or reposition.
