• The Ladakh administration announced the creation of Sankoo as the Union Territory’s eighth district.
• Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena approved the decision.
• The announcement fulfils a long-standing demand by people in the Sankoo area of Kargil district.
• As per the notification issued by the Revenue Department, the newly created Sankoo district comprises four tehsils: Sankoo, GM Pore, TSG and Taisuru, along with the revenue villages.
• The jurisdiction of Kargil district has been modified by excluding the tehsils and revenue villages now included in Sankoo district.
• The creation of Sankoo district marks an important administrative development for the region and is expected to facilitate governance and public service delivery closer to the people.
• On April 27, Saxena approved issuing a notification to create five new districts — Sham, Nubra, Changthang, Zanskar and Drass — raising the total number of districts in Ladakh from two to seven.
• Earlier, Leh and Kargil were the only two districts in Ladakh.
• Ladakh was granted Union Territory status in 2019 after the enactment of the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
