Oscar announces new Best Stunt Design category

• The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the creation of an annual competitive Academy Award for Achievement in Stunt Design, beginning with the 100th Academy Awards for films released in 2027.

• Category rules for eligibility and voting for the inaugural award will be announced in 2027 with the complete 100th Academy Awards Rules. 

• The specifics of the award’s presentation will be determined by the Academy’s Board of Governors and executive leadership.

• The film academy's production and technology branch has more than 100 stunt performers among its ranks.

• The last new award category created was Achievement in Casting, established in 2024 and beginning with the 98th Academy Awards for films released in 2025.

• The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is home to a global membership of more than 10,500 of the most accomplished film industry artists and leaders. 

• It was established in 1927.

• The Academy recognises and celebrates all aspects of the arts and sciences of moviemaking through renowned awards for cinematic achievement, including the Oscars.

• Academy membership is limited to film artists working in the production of theatrically-released motion pictures.

• The Academy has 19 branches, for the crafts ranging from Actors to Writers, and the Artist Representatives category, for individuals who work in motion pictures as a representative.

• Oscar stands 13½ inches tall and weighs in at a robust 8½ pounds. The statuettes are solid bronze and plated in 24-karat gold.
