Victory in Europe Day
• On May 8, 1945, celebrations erupted around the world to mark the end of World War II in Europe.
• Victory in Europe (V-E) Day signalled the end of almost six years of terrible fighting between the Allies and Nazi Germany.
• The conflict began in 1939, when Germany and the Soviet Union invaded Poland.
• The signing of an unconditional surrender by the German High Command took place on May 7, 1945. The surrender took effect from midnight on 8 to 9 May. The Allies proclaimed May 8 as Victory in Europe Day. It brought an end to the war against Germany and its European allies.
• After the many deaths during the war in Europe, V-E Day was cause for worldwide celebration.
• It meant an end to nearly six years of a war that had cost the lives of millions; had destroyed homes, families, and cities; and had brought huge suffering and privations to the populations of entire countries.
• But it was not the end of the conflict. The war in the East did not end until August 15, 1945, when Japan surrendered. The day was celebrated across the world as ‘Victory over Japan’.
