Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais to become first woman to head UN Tourism

• Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais will become the first woman to lead the UN Tourism in its 50-year history. 

• She has gained significant experience in the private sector, most notably as corporate vice president at Rotana Hotels. She also chairs the Abu Dhabi Chamber’s Tourism Working Group and serves on the boards of the Abu Dhabi Businesswomen Council and Les Roches Hospitality Academy.

• She will begin her term at the start of 2026.

• The appointment of the new Secretary-General for the term 2026-2030 was the highlight of the first day of the UN Tourism General Assembly which is being held in Riyadh from November 7 to 11. 

• The theme of the General Assembly is “The Impact of Artificial Intelligence and Innovation in Shaping Global Tourism”. The theme showcases the growing importance of AI technology in the tourism sector.

What is the purpose of UN Tourism?

• The World Tourism Organisation (UN Tourism) is the United Nations specialised agency for responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. 

• The first General Assembly of WTO met in Madrid, Spain from May 12 to 24, 1975.

• The UNWTO was renamed to UN Tourism in 2024.

• In collaboration with its 160 Member States, six Associate Members and over 500 affiliate members, UN Tourism works to position tourism as a key driver of economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability.

• The Organisation promotes the inclusion of tourism in national and global agendas, advocating for its potential to reduce poverty, generate employment, foster innovation and contribute to the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

• The UN Tourism General Assembly serves as the supreme organ of the Organisation, while the Executive Council, which oversees the implementation of decisions in consultation with the Secretary-General.

• Based in Madrid, Spain, the Secretariat is led by the Secretary-General and is organised into thematic and regional departments. 

UN Tourism focuses on five strategic priorities: 

i) Accelerating innovation and digital transformation.

ii) Enhancing sector competitiveness through investment and entrepreneurship.

iii) Generating employment and expanding training opportunities.

iv) Improving resilience and ensuring safe, seamless travel.

v) Protecting cultural and natural heritage while supporting local communities.
