• Turkey, Qatar, Pakistan, and Indonesia signed ‘Badr Memorandum of Understanding’ to boost defence cooperation on October 21 in Doha.
• The development comes amid escalating tensions in the Gulf region.
The MoU aims to:
i) Foster cooperation in defence manufacturing.
ii) Enhance the four countries’ defence capabilities.
iii) Promote collaboration in technical defence training and research and development contributing to industrial solutions suited to modern defence systems.
• The name ‘Badr’, Arabic for “full moon”, symbolises how the four countries complement one another through the agreement.
• By leveraging the unique military production capabilities of each country, the initiative will facilitate cooperation and integration, enhance defence industrial capacities, and enable the fulfillment of the needs of allied and friendly nations.
• Turkey, which has NATO’s second-largest army and a robust defence industry, has been helping Gulf nations, including Qatar, where it has a military base, bolster their defences amid the Iran war.
• In August, Turkey signed the Mecca defence pact with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, under which an attack on one party constitutes an attack on all.
